Schools: Making the Decision
When researching occupational therapy programs, you have to choose the program that is best fit for you. Location, quality and quantity of the program, and tuition may all be factors. However, length of the program or opportunities different schools offer - such as internships or practicums - may also be factors in making this decision. Different programs are going to offer different degrees (Masters or Doctorate).
Below are some aspects to consider when researching programs and the application process.
Below are some aspects to consider when researching programs and the application process.
Program Requirements |
One aspect to really consider is a program's requirements and prerequisites. These are the courses, course hours, and other commitments each program requires before applying to their program. Generally, this includes math, physical science, and psychology courses, but again, each program is unique in what specifics are required. Some schools require students take the GRE, while others do not. Another general requirement is some form of volunteer or shadow hours. This may involve shadowing a current occupational therapist or working with individuals with disabilities. Check into any programs you're interested in and keep track of all courses and hours. This may ease some stress when it comes to time to start applying.

Occupational Therapy Centralized Application System: OTCAS |
OTCAS is also something to become familiar with when researching schools and beginning the application process. OTCAS is the centralized application system that some OT programs utilize. Typically the site opens mid-July and closes the following June. Applicants use the system to upload transcripts, letters of recommendation, hours spent volunteering or shadowing, personal information, personal statement, etc. There will also be a section for you to select schools you may be interested in. Each will have some sort of questionnaire or essay to complete, along with a fee, that you complete before submitting. Be sure to keep tabs on when each school begins accepting applications and whether or not they have a rolling admissions process in place.
